I talk a lot about The Capsule Wardrobe and although there is guideline on what you need but your lifestyle will determine the 'types' of basic pieces you need. You need to have a clear idea of what you are trying to accomplish with your Capsule Wardrobe before you start shopping or you will just be wasting your money and your time. If you are a stay at home worker you don't need suits so you should opt for casual fitted blazers and pencil skirts in matte jersey. If you are an attorney you don't need casual clothes so you need to look for more traditional suiting separates.
Most companies have a mission statement that keeps them focused on who they are and they stay true to that statement at least the successful companies do so why not make a mission statement about you? Having a mission statement will give you a clear idea of who you are and what your long term goals are. Knowing that will give you more direction in regards to building the perfect Capsule Wardrobe for you.
How To Write a Mission Statement:
1.Who are you?
2.What do you do? Who are you?
3.What are your long term goals?
4.What are your roles? Career, Family and Volunteer work?
5.What do you want for yourself and your family (significant other)?
6.How do you want people to perceive you? First impressions are everything.
Knowing this will point you in the right direction as to what you need which will set you up for success. It may seem a little much since it is just clothes but it's not just clothes its an investment. It is how the world see's you. It's about projecting the image you want people to see.
Personality Items
?You don't have to give up your personality because you are opting for a Capsule Wardrobe. I add a leather moto jacket to a classic shift dress to make it mine.
?Accessories are a great way to add your quirky, little personality. I have a 'signature' look and it is the contradiction of mixing feminine pieces with masculine.
?Be cautious when adding personality to your career wardrobe you don't want that to be the focus. The focus should be on you and your abilities.
I have a specific list that is a great guideline for building The Capsule Wardrobe but it is up to you and how you answered those questions as to the style, cut and fabric of those items will be. Matte Jersey is great for a casual lifestyle but wool, crepe and silk are more appropriate for a more 'corporate' lifestyle.
Shopping Tip: If you can't think of at least 3 different ways to wear it don't buy it. The capsule wardrobe can be restyled, mixed and matched to expand your wardrobe with less pieces. Go for quality, I keep beating this like a dead horse but it is the most important aspect of The Capsule Wardrobe. Never buy something because of the price remember less is more.
