In doing this purge of my closet one of things I have had to do was assess what my signature look is, you need to know this in order to create a Capsule Wardrobe that works for you. I have been at a loss, signature style do I even have one? I have been running through old pictures and looking at what I have. Originally I would say eclectic or ADHD because I go from classic to boho and everything in between so to say what my signature look was well impossible. I have to have a signature look I just have to look a little harder or maybe I have to let go of classifications and look beyond that. So what are these Classifications, my new theory of fashion.
As far as classifications I have broken them down to these sub groups:
? Classic
?Obviously I think we can all agree Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly come to mind when we talk about Classic Fashion. Shift dresses, fit and flare dresses, pencil skirts (longer hemline) and white button down shirts to name a few. Classic Fashion is timeless meaning it could have been worn 20 years ago and 20 years from now. Colors are neutral and no busy patterns. Classic Fashion is not trendy or loud
?Dramatic

This is the Ginger not the Mary Ann woman, if you don't know you need to start watching Gilligan's Island. We use to break men into 2 distinct groups they were either Ginger's or Mary Ann's. Other examples of Dramatic Fashion are Marilyn Monroe, Madonna, Lady Gaga and Joan Collins. When they walk into a room you see them immediately which is what they want. You have to have the right personality to pull of Dramatic otherwise you will look more like a carnival reject than Hollywood glamour. Personally I can't do it but some women are bigger than life and need a look that fits them.

With the 70's trends and of course being in the middle of Festival Season we are seeing a lot of this style. The woman that comes to mind for me is Jane Birkin, google images of her and you will see that she had an ease that was approachable,warm and wearable today. She would be of the Mary Ann camp so the opposite of Dramatic Fashion. Other examples of Bohemian Fashion would be Stevie Nicks, Ali McGraw, Nicole Ritchie and Alexa Chung.
?MInimalists

Don't confuse Minimalist Fashion with plain it is anything but boring. Like Classic Fashion you won't find bright colors or patterns but it is different than Classic Fashion. Minimalist Fashion is sort of a mix of Classic and Dramatic. Unlike Dramatic it is not loud but it is very modern. Minimalist's rely on cut, fabric and structure. The late Caroline Bessett Kennedy is a name that typically comes to mind when you think Minimalist Fashion. Other examples would be Angelina Jolie, Victoria Beckham and of course Mademoiselle Coco Chanel.
Then there are variations of these Fashion Categories which is where you find your Signature Look. It's the 'voice' that defines who you are and that is your Signature Style. Like I said I love all of the Fashion Categories and you will find examples in my closet of all them so this is what was getting in the way of defining my Signature Look but I do have one. I love contradiction in what I wear whether it is modern mixed with vintage, feminine mixed with masculine or sweet mixed with something edgy. It's the way you wear these Fashion Categories that is your Signature Look not the category itself. The details are your voice and they represent who you are, where you have been and where you are going.
If I think about it the truth is my Signature Look, the mixing of feminine with masculine, the contradiction tells you a lot about me. I am stronger than I look so a floral dress styled with a leather motor jacket and black biker boots say exactly that. My ability to adapt and fit in anywhere can be seen when I wear a formal ball skirt with a Rolling Stones tee. Then there is my rebellious side that can be seen when I wear a converse shoes with a sequined skirt in the middle of the day. My Signature Look tells a story of who I am and how I got here. It shows you that I am not what you see, that there are all of these Contradictions that make me who I am.
What is your Signature Look? To know that you have to know who you are and where you have been.
